Data Rescue 3.0b: frequently asked questions
Data Rescue freezes/crashes. What should I do?
- Check SCSI connections, IDs and terminations.
- Disconnect unnecessary devices.
- Bad SCSI cables can cause the Macintosh to freeze. Try with better
cables.
- Try to disable system extensions by pressing 'shift' at startup. If
you need some system extensions, like drivers for SCSI boards or disks,
use the Extension Manager to disable all other extensions.
- If Data Rescue still crashes and you use Macsbug, please send the output
of 'IP' and 'SC' to support@wildbits.com.
Why are some files listed twice?
- Sometimes, your volume contains obsolete catalog entries. If Data Rescue
finds more than 1 catalog entry for the same file in your volume, it displays
them all. You should check which is the 'correct' entry and hide all others,
otherwise Data Rescue will recover the first entry in the list and generate
'file already exists' errors for the others. To find which is the correct
entry, check dates and file contents.
- Special protection or optimization tools such as 'TechTool Pro' can
leave partial or full catalog copies on your volume (incidentally or on
purpose). If so many duplicates will appear in Data Rescue's list. You
can get rid of these duplicates with item 'Disable Duplicates' in the 'Expert'
menu.
Does Data Rescue handle RAID volumes?
- Data Rescue handles 'hardware' RAID volumes transparently. However,
the LUN of your volume must be 0.
- Data Rescue handles 'software' RAID volumes (such as SoftRAID volumes)
only if you can access them through the driver.
